MY SENSE OF INDEPENDENCE (BIKE) FROM THE GIANT MOVING LAND TANKER (BUS).
I decided to throw my bike under the bus for this tour. In the past I have been known to start walking and keep walking until I find myself in some very strange places. I have boarded ferrys not sure where they were headed and climbed hills to see what’s on the other side. In high school we used to jump on freight trains and ride them through town, mostly with spray cans in our hands. In college my roommate and I packed two back packs and waited by the tracks in Chico to see how far we could go–we thought maybe Oregon. With great sadness only one train came traveling well above running speeds. Yesterday I finally realized that when asked what I would do if I wasn’t a musician the answer would most definitely be an explorer, and preferably one in the 1800’s.
In Milwaukee I rode along the lake shore from downtown north for 15 miles. I think I finally understand how magical the Great Lakes are. There were hidden beaches along the entire path and some amazing old homes. There were so many trees I wouldn’t be surprised to see signs for Tree City U.S.A. up around whitefish bay.
The show in Milwaukee was truly epic. Summerfest came out with all its grit and passion. Brett Dennen went on right before us and set the bar extremely high. He has this comfortable mesmerizing awkwardness that is completely endearing. We hit the stage and the crowd was the loudest I can ever remember.
Last night we played in bloomington to a packed room of beautiful people, I saw someone recording the show from the audience… I’m curious to hear how it turned out, from my end it felt great. Thank you to everyone who had been coming out, this feels like our best tour yet.
