DAYTROTTER–HISTORY IN THE MAKING?

YESTERDAY MAT STOPPED BY DAYTROTTER STUDIOS TO PERFORM 4 SONGS, HERE’S SOME INFORMATION ABOUT THE DAYTROTTER PROJECT FROM THEIR WEBSITE.
“DAYTROTTER — ONE BAND A DAY, EVERY DAY, 28 DAYTROTTER SESSION SONGS EACH WEEK

We are not giving you songs from someone you love’s record album, thereby stealing from someone you love. We’re giving you exclusive, re-worked, alternate versions of old songs and unreleased tracks by some of your favorite bands and by a lot of your next favorite bands.

These fine people – as they’re traveling through America’s heartland – take two hours out of their travels between shows to stop in for a Daytrotter Session at The Horseshack in downtown Rock Island, Ill.

The Daytrotter recordings are made with minimal mic’ing, through discrete preamps and with some limiting to the mixing console, where they are printed to 1/4” analog tape running at 15 inches per second (usually BASF 468). The analog master is later transferred to a computer and converted to MP3.

There is no set formula or pattern to the recordings, no specific mic setup, etc. They are all live, no overdubs, straight to tape. What you hear is what happened in the room that day.”

The studio is beginning to acquire a really rich history, and seems to be blazing a new path in music. They seem to have a keen ability to spot new and emerging artists(Spoon, Dinosaur JR., Fleet Foxes, Death Cab for Cutie, Andrew Bird) with immense talent and help expose them to a bigger audience. The studio itself was not exactly what I had anticipated. You walk into an unmarked door go up two flight of stairs and then you see this sign…

On the way up the next flight of stairs you see this to your right…

The building itself has a specific sort of charm that could only come from all the memorabilia on the walls from famous artists past and present that have performed in the studio. It gives the place a sense of history without having any historic elements in it.

The songs that I heard Mat play were slowed down and more melodic then they appear on the record, with added piano and organ, the drum arrangement minimal. It sounded amazing. Can’t wait for you guys to hear the recorded tracks.

I’ll post the songs as soon as they put them up.

-Jonny
