TOUR BLOG: NORFOLK

Hey Guys,

Let me start out by saying that our dressing room today had a hot tub, sauna, leather couches, giant TVs, foosball, a pool table, and a basketball court. Uh yeah. Pretty sweet.

Some of you that have been following this for a while may remember the second show we played on the Keane tour and how the dressing room was basically a mechanical room with a table in it. Ooooooh how things have changed!

Jeremy (drums), Tyler (guitar) and myself all started the day by going to lunch at this place in mall called Kincaid’s. They were advertising this pretty sweet lunch deal for $10. You got a salad and half a portion of a sandwich or salmon and a drink. It was pretty good. Except Tyler’s $10 lunch ended up turning into a $20 lunch because he mistakenly ordered the house salad instead of the side salad. This had him peeved for pretty much the rest of the day.

I spent most of the day trying to work out the kinks of this “impromptu acoustic performance in a strange location” thing that I’ve started. I wanted to shoot it in the hot tub but the guys were all a little weary of their instruments being in or around the water. I don’t get but whatever… haha.

I finally decided upon the basketball court, then asked Jeremy if he thought he could use a basketball for rhythm. Turns out he can. The ”impromptu acoustic performance in a strange location” thing turned out amazing! I can’t wait to show you guys. I don’t want to reveal too much else about it. Maybe after I post it if everyone is interested in seeing more I can post another video as kind of a “making of”. It was really interesting watching Mat and the guys rehearse and work out the kinks of performing “Closer To Love” with a tennis racket, two basketballs, and an acoustic guitar.

Also, going forward I’ve decided on a mission statement for the ”impromptu acoustic performance in a strange location” thing and a new name.

The mission statement: ”The location of the performance is not just a place where the music is performed, but that the location becomes a part of the music itself.”
The new name: “The Location is the Music” or “The LITM shows” I think… Maybe that’s dumb. I can’t decide. You decide. Send me your ideas for a name! Just use the mission statement as a jumping off point. Cool.

TOUR BLOG VIDEO: MAT AND DIERKS

BLOG POST: CHARLESTON

Chaaaaarleston!
What’s up! For the past 3 days of the tour I had been on the hunt for a VCR. Yes, A VCR. I have exciting things in store for the video portion of this tour and a VCR is just one part of my plan. Unfortunately Wal-Mart doesn’t sell VCRs anymore. Basically nobody does. So I woke up and just started walking down the main drag in Charleston. The first place I stopped at called “Honest John’s” seemed like a really good prospect. Lots of old VHS tapes, cassettes, dust, etc… but no VCR. So, I kept on walking, and walking, and walking… until I came to a run down, tired, looking building that had neon signs in the window advertising “Guitars, TVs, and Jewelry” this place looked promising… I stepped outside of the intense Charlotte heat and was transported into a world of golden A/C blasting me from all directions. ”Do you guys sell VCRs?” I said… Their response “Yes”. Thank God. The hunt was over. Unfortunately the VCR fiasco didn’t end there. It took me about 5 more hours and 3 trips back to the pawn shop to finally figure out how to work it. I felt like a 60 yr old man learning how to use a computer for the first time. Haha.
The photobooth went amazing at this show and we had a really overwhelming response! Hopefully it stays this, please come visit us and get your picture taken at the next show! Again the crowd response to Mat’s music was one of the best ever. Thanks for being amazing fans and keep up the great support. We can’t wait to see you at the next show!

TOUR BLOG: CHARLOTTE

Hey Charlotte!
We had a great time in your town… and I can only hope that we get to visit you again soon. The day started when I stepped off the bus into the sweltering Charlotte heat. It was HOT. Really HOT. The type of heat that instantly required a shower. The folks at the venue were super nice and had an SUV ready to take us to the Blake hotel. The hotel was super nice. I love the Blake hotel. I was hungry so pre-shower I went wandering around Charlotte looking for a restaurant called ”McDills”. Not “Mcdonalds”. I think I may have the spelling on “McDills” wrong. But anyway I never found it and ended up at the Marshall Music Festival. Again, I think my spelling is off… Ha. I got some food from a stand serving whiting and croaker. It was delicious.
One wonderful shower later it was time to set up the photobooth. The first one went pretty good, though we had difficulty finding a place to set up in the Bijou Theatre. We did it outside and people didn’t quite seem to get it. This one seemed bound to go over better.
At the end of the show Mat asked me “was this the best crowd ever?” my response was… “Yes”. Congratulations Charlotte.

GREETINGS FROM MAT KEARNEY

So the tour has started!!!! The Bijou Theater in Knoxville seemed like a grand place to start it all off. It is a beautiful theater with a rich history, everyone was so attentive that it made me a little nervous. We ended up playing longer than I intended, no one seemed to mind. I was a little nervous as it was my first headlining show in over a year. I remembered all the lyrics and made it through just fine.
We played Birmingham last night as part of the ever-growing City Stages. I started the day with an acoustic radio performance from the roof top of some swanky hotel. I was sweating so much i had to play with my eyes closed because they burned from my dripping forehead. It was suffering I was willing to do for Scott Reggister (the first dj to play my music.) We took the stage and the streets where packed with smiling Alabamians. From the stage i had a view past the crowd down 16th all the way to the capital building. It was a beautiful night. As the night ended i found myself on stage with Dierks Bentley singing a Johnny Cash cover. It was epic!
So far so good… I hope I get to see you soon.

I’M BACK!

Hey Guys,
I’m back! Mat asked me to go out again on this second tour. This time we are mixing things up a little bit. The biggest change is that there will now be a City of Black & White Tour 2009 Fan Photobooth at every show! It’s there for you guys, so as you’re coming into the show be sure and stop by have your photo taken. Then we’ll have it up for you to download the very next day. You can use this photo however you want, on your Facebook page, Myspace, Twitter, on your wall… whatever! Look for new photos from every show and written blog updates just like last time. The videos are changing a bit this time however, instead of doing one for every city we’re doing just a couple a week.
Also, now once a week Mat will perform an exclusive acoustic performance in some random location… AKA a bus, an elevator, etc. I’ll film this performance and put it up on the blog for you guys. I’m taking suggestions now for the first one! Send me your location ideas, song preferences. I’ll take requests once a week. Yay! Super excited about connecting with you guys out on the road again. See you soon!

TOUR BLOG DAY 15: CLEVELAND

Cleveland Rocks! Cleveland Rocks! Ohioooooooo!
(So, I watched a lot of the Drew Carey show back in the day… and I just had to do that.)
We were greeted early in the morning by a thick plume of black smoke filling the air. Apparently, we were parked right next to the harbor in Cleveland and there was a giant boat being turned around by a couple of tugboats. It was pretty cool.
There was also a rib festival happening right outside our door. There were rib trophies everywhere! Everybody had signs claiming they had the best ribs in the nation and the jury is still out on who actually is the best. The band and I went around from stand to stand to try every different kind of rib, in the hopes of finally confirming the age old question of who does in fact make the best ribs in America. In the end we all settled upon Pigfoot as having the best ribs. What do you guys think? Who had the best ribs there?
Also, Adrian got an amazing waffle ice cream sandwich.
