TOUR BLOG DAY 14: TORONTO

Heeeey Toronto,
So, I missed the bus this morning… that was a rough way to start the day. After spending half hour or so trying to figure out how to get to the venue with about 50 pounds of gear I decided upon a cab. I was pleasantly surprised for the cab to take me all the way down to the waterfront. The venue was in a weird spot with a rock climbing wall, several volleyball courts, a drive in movie theatre, and a golf driving range.
Later, Mat and the band played a game of volleyball with some of Keane’s crew members. The Hell Dominators vs. The Riffs. The first game was a blow out. The Hell Dominators 21-7. The second game was a little closer this time… but again the Hell Dominators were victorious, 21-11. Then came the third game, there was a lot of bad blood in the air and the the Riffs were really hoping to redeem themselves. There was lots of aggressive taunts and curse words that mostly came from the Hell Dominators’ side. But in the end they didn’t prevail and the Riffs won their first and only game. By the end of the third game, it was just about show time so everyone had to call it quits.
Mat played what he described “the best show of tour” and we were all hoping to hop on board a sailboat at the end of the show but it just wasn’t meant to be.
Can’t wait to eat barbeque in Cleveland! The show is at a barbeque cookoff apparently…

TOUR BLOG DAY 13: DAY OFF TORONTO

Hey everybody… Mat and I sat in our hotel rooms and worked most of the day. I worked on videos… and Mat worked on his golf swing. He literally had his clubs in the hotel room and was putting into a coffee cup laying on the hotel room floor…
Sorry for the delay in getting videos out… the internet has been bad for so many days and it’s made it nearly impossible to upload anything to youtube. I’m getting caught up as we speak though. So look for tons of updates soon. See you soon. Thanks!

TOUR BLOG DAY 12: BOSTON

What’s up Red Sox Nation!
I woke up today in Boston at the Bank of America Pavilion. Wow, what a gorgeous day! The weather was beautiful and we were parked right next to the pier. The sailboats were circling the harbor and the seagulls were floating high above us in the air. The dressing room was nice and we all got showers for the first time in a few days.
Mat had a radio interview early in the morning on WBMX, did anyone hear it? I met Kennedy from the station later on that night and she seemed nice.
The show sounded great and Mat and the band seemed to play one of their best shows yet. Obviously you guys felt the same way. There was a line of about 200 people lined up around the venue for a chance to meet Mat and get him to sign the new CD. Mat’s been signing autographs after every show and the response has been overwhelming. You guys seem to really love it. I met a lot of you in line, I was the one handing out the little cards.
Can you guys send in your favorite pictures from the show? We’d love to see them. I may even post them up on the blog, even posting every now and then with fan stuff thats been sent in. We have a day off in Toronto tomorrow. Does anyone know of good places to eat in Toronto/things to do? Also, I woke up today and had no idea what day it was… is that bad?

TOUR BLOG DAY 11: PHILADELPHIA

Hello Philly!
We woke up super early in the city of brotherly love this morning to do a TV taping for an NBC morning show. It was a beautiful morning in Philly and the air smelled of cheesesteak. Aaaah, it was glorious. I love Philly and after yesterday’s record release we were well on our way to a great day. The morning show people were sweet and treated us well, although, it was strange to see women walking around in swimsuits and chef’s cooking food at 7:30 in the morning. Another strange thing about morning tv shows… there’s a dj that spins top 40 hits during commercial breaks and a strange assortment of audience members that show up to watch a tv show taping at 7:30 in the morning. But Mat’s acoustic performance with Tyler went really well and it was a lot of fun to see how it all worked behind the scenes. Did anyone see the 10! show taping on TV? There’s also a second song that Mat performed for a late night TV special that comes on after Saturday Night Live… let us know if you see it!
We ended the night by all sitting around on the bus watching The Office season 4 outtakes on DVD. Pretty great day. Cya in boston!

TOUR BLOG DAY 10: RECORD RELEASE DAY. WASHINGTON D.C.

The day is here. THE DAY. It’s record release day. This event is only happening for the second time in Mat’s life. He is excited.
It’s 12:01 AM and Mat is checking iTunes to see what spot his record is on the charts. 41. It’s an impressive number, this feels like the start of something huge.
It’s 9:30 AM and we check again. The album is at number 20 on the charts. Mat and I wake up early and get picked up at the bus around 8:30 and head to a Gibson showcase room where Mat and a local radio station have joined forces to offer 75 lucky fans the opportunity of a lifetime. A chance to see him perform an exclusive acoustic set on the day of his record release. We head into Chinatown and drive around the block about 20 times trying to find the Gibson showcase room. Turns out it’s hidden. Mat gets warmed up and performs an awesome set. The fans are thrilled. Afterwards, he signs autographs for everyone and takes pictures.
We head back to the venue just in time for a brief soundcheck. Mat doesn’t realize it but the guys in Keane have planned a special surprise for him.
We’re backstage in the dressing room just about ready to go on stage and Mat is trying to propose a toast with the band, but nobody will participate. He’s confused and doesn’t understand why everyone is refusing to toast with him. Minutes before the band is about to take the stage Keane shows up with a couple bottles of champagne and congratulates Mat on his record release, we pop the champagne and all is well.
It’s 12:00 AM at the end of the show and we check iTunes again. The album is at number 7. Mat is blown away. The fans are amazing.

TOUR BLOG DAY 8: CHICAGO

Hey!
We’re in Chicago today at one of the coolest venues I’ve seen in my life - The Aragon Theater. This place is so crazy. You really have to see it to believe it, but there is basically a fortress built inside the venue. There are castle towers, swords hanging over the stage, dungeon doors, a giant space mural on the ceiling, and cool renaissance drawings on the walls.
Unbelievable.
There were quite a few people lined up outside the venue today before the show. Mat’s dressing room overlooked the line and he was yelling things out at the fans, I’m not sure if anyone heard/saw him…
Somebody asked for restaurant recommendations for different cities that we’ve visited. Unfortunately most of the time we just eat the catering at the venue but here’s a few that we have visited that I know Mat loves.
This one is Mat’s favorite sushi place in L.A., seems like a hole in the wall because its just in a random strip mall. But so good.

Neighborhood: Hollywood
6051 Hollywood Blvd Ste 105
Los Angeles, CA 90028

This next one is a place we ate it in Denver that Tyler recommended. Mat loved it. Going to become a regular stop whenever in Denver.

TOUR BLOG DAY 7: ST. PAUL

Hello Again!
Greetings from St. Paul, Minnesota! We parked in the Maplewood Mall this morning and loaded in at the Myth. Mat woke up early in the morning and headed to the Best Buy just down the street to perform an in-store. Did anyone see/hear it? How did you like it?
I know you guys were interested in meeting the band so I put together something special for you in the next video. It’s not your typical band introductions and I hope you guys have as much fun watching it as we did making it…
The Myth had a cool vibe about it and the show seemed to be sold out. There was a lot of you that got in line early today, so sorry about the rain! I hope everyone didn’t get drenched waiting out there! I think I gathered a lot of cool new photos for you too. Whenever Mat is not in the photos he actually picked up the camera himself and shot photos of myself and the band. Look for them on the Flickr page and let Mat know what you think about his photography skills!
Also, I taught Mat how to Twitter today so you can expect some updates coming from him soon. Look forward to seeing you guys in Chicago!

GREETINGS FROM MAT KEARNEY: SALT LAKE CITY

TOUR BLOG DAY 5: DENVER

Hello everyone!
Here’s a taste of life on the road for Mat…
8:30 AM: The bus stops. This means we’ve arrived at our destination for the day. Today’s destination - the Ogen Theatre in Denver, CO. Mat has a radio interview in an hour so we all hurry off the bus to grab quick showers at the hotel.
9:30 AM: Post shower. Mat and a couple of his bands members (I swear I’ll introduce everyone to the band in tomorrow’s video) played an impromptu acoustic performance in the hotel lobby. The people working the front desk were thrilled, to say the least.
9:40 AM: We were then picked up by Ray and driven to Boulder to KCBO 93.7. The radio station was awesome, seemed to have a lot of history behind it.
11:30 PM: Mat played an acoustic performance over the air, “Nothing Left To Lose” and “Closer To Love”. Both sounded great.
1:00 PM: Lunch. Yum. We were hungry.
2:00 PM: Mat plays a solo acoustic performance at radio station KALC. 2 songs plus interview.
3:30 PM: Mat arrives back at the bus and gets prepared for soundcheck.
4:00 PM: Soundcheck.
5:00 PM: Soundcheck ends.
6:30 PM: Dinner. One of the band members made a recommendation to eat at a place up the street called Potager. So good. This restaurant now comes highly recommended from Mat, the rest of the band, and myself. If you’re in the Denver area you have to be sure and check it out.
8:00 PM: Showtime. Mat added new intro music to walk out to for this show, the ending of “City and Black & White”.
12:00 AM: The bus leaves Denver headed for Omaha, NE. Day off tomorrow.
Was anyone at the show? How was it? Did you like the intro music? The show went great again tonight (of course)! Stay tuned for Denver’s tour blog video!

TOUR BLOG DAY 4: SALT LAKE CITY

Hello!
Well, Day 4 of the tour in Salt Lake City is officially a wrap. The campus was beautiful… you could see snow-peaked mountain tops from where the bus was parked!
Mat has been hard at work the past few days. While me and the band all had the day off in Vegas, he was already in Salt Lake City doing radio interviews all day. Afterwards, he was saving his voice and didn’t talk all day until the show tonight so his voice was at it’s peak for you guys. It paid off. The show tonight was the best one yet. Mat and the band sounded amazing.
The dressing room was SOOO much better this time. Check it out in the photos. It looks like a theater dressing room.
Thank you all so much for all the amazing response to the videos and photos. Mat and I read through them today and they were really reassuring. It’s hard sometimes to do something entirely for the fans and you wonder if they actually care at all… you guys made it very clear that you were listening and that you cared. We’re both really excited about sharing our experience on the road with you. In Denver tomorrow, can’t wait to see you guys there!

TOUR BLOG DAY 3: OFF DAY

Not much to report here… just had an off day in Las Vegas.

GREETINGS FROM MAT KEARNEY DAY 2: ANAHEIM

TOUR BLOG DAY 2: ANAHEIM, CA

Hello again!
We left Hollywood around 6:30 in the morning and continued on our journey headed for Anaheim, for tonight’s show at The Grove.
We arrived at the venue groggy and tired from the night before. Everyone was looking forward to tonight’s show.
By the time I woke up around 10:30 A.M., Mat was already long gone for the day… to go golfing. In case you didn’t know, Mat’s a pretty avid golfer.
The “dressing room” we were given at The Grove was not so much a “dressing room” but more or less the electrical closet. Mat gives an exclusive inside look at the beautiful facilities and shows you around so be sure and check that out in the video blog. Speaking of, is everyone into the videos? Tell me what you want to see more of. We’re doing this for you guys, so be interactive and comment often. We all want to hear what you think!
Showtime. The crowd seems anxious and ready for Mat to take the stage. The band is pumped up to have a great show tonight as well. Turns out they did. The last song of the set was “There’s Nothing Left to Lose” and Mat invited the audience to join in at the end of the song. 3,500 people singing along with Mat is a pretty magical experience. Check it out in this show’s video as well.
See you in Salt Lake City!

TOUR BLOG DAY 1: HOLLYWOOD, CA

Hey Everyone!
We are finally here. The day has arrived. Yes, you guessed right… the tour has begun!
Flashback: it’s day one of the tour and everyone’s nerves were running high. This was the first show Mat’s played in a year and half… and there was a new band and a brand new album that had only been rehearsed for a few weeks. The air was thick and you could feel the energy all over the venue.
Mat and the band were running on a limited amount of sleep, having been in Miami just the day before. They flew out of Miami at 6:00 A.M., and arrived in L.A. at 10 A.M., got on the bus and headed straight for the venue. There was a lot of last minute preparation that had to be done before the show. Getting all the gear loaded in, the instruments tuned, buying extension cords, etc… Soundcheck was from 4 to 5 and the band wasn’t even ready until 4:55. So they had 5 minutes to soundcheck, which of course wasn’t nearly enough.
The venue was awesome, and the people friendly, but the show only went “okay” from Mat’s perspective. Being the dedicated perfectionist that he is about his art this “okay” show was disappointing to him and he hoped to give his fans more. But nobody in the crowd seemed to notice…
All in all there was a lot learned and everyone’s looking forward to the next show in Anaheim, CA at The Grove. See you there!

WELCOME TO MAT KEARNEY’S BLACK & WHITE TOUR BLOG 2009!

Hello Everyone!
Welcome to Mat Kearney’s black & white tour blog 2009! I will be Mat’s eyes and ears over the next month or so while he embarks on one of the biggest and most exciting tours of his life. He wants to keep YOU, the fans, connected with him and what he’s doing throughout the tour, and I’ll be with him following him every step of the way! Keep on the look out for updates through Mat’s Twitter page, Facebook, and uploading new photos and videos everyday right here to this blog.
Let me take a minute to introduce myself. My name is Jonny K. I’ll be writing from my perspective most of the time, unless Mat is writing directly to you in which case he will sign the blog “-Mat Kearny”, so that you know it’s from him.
Also, be sure and check back often for new content. Mat and I will be looking for your feedback throughout the whole process! Let us know about the video content(want you want to see more of/what you want to see less of, etc…), all the way down to the littlest of details, like what font we’re using in the videos.
I’m in Atlanta right now having a mini work vacation, so I’ve been holed up in a hotel in the middle of Duluth, GA building elements for the blog videos for the past couple of days. Mat and I are very excited to share his experience on tour with you and can’t wait to show everybody what we’ve been working on. Looking forward to seeing everybody out on the road!
